Supporting Young Women with The King's Trust

Supporting Young Women with The King's Trust

This International Women's Day, we are helping to raise vital funds to support young women to build better futures for themselves through employment, education or by starting their own businesses.

On 3rd March, we headed down to Battersea Power Station for the #ChangeAGirlsLife Marketplace for International Women's Day.

We met lots of amazing entrepreneurs from brilliant female-owned businesses that The Trust have supported through their Enterprise programme, and we may have even done a little shopping ourselves...

We met the lovely Nyomi, who started her business, Sanaa Gift Shop, with help from The King's Trust's Enteprise programme.

“Through The King’s Trust, I’ve been able to start my business, Sanaa Gift Shop which is all about inclusivity and the positive representation of the Black community.

“One Christmas, I was looking for wrapping paper with a Black Santa image on it, and I just couldn’t find it anywhere. In the end I thought ‘I’ll just make it myself’ and set about doing just that.

“My friends and family were so supportive and said how much they loved the designs and that they’d never seen anything like that before. That’s how I started getting back into designing and developed my idea for a fully inclusive, representative brand."

"I officially launched my business in 2022, this included opening my online Etsy store Sanaa Gift Shop. I was also given a mentor by The Trust – Neil has a lot of experience in business, so I have someone who I can go to if I have any business-related questions and ideas."

"My business is going really well. I think it’s so important to see a true representation of what Britain looks like in the products that we buy. Often when I shop, I pick up whatever I like, not what feels ‘me’. For a Black person, particularly a young Black person, it’s important to know that we’re included and embraced, and I hope that my products remind them of the love that they have within themselves.

“I don’t want people from other communities to think my products aren’t for them, they’re for everyone, I’m not about segregation, I’m about inclusion. I love the thought of someone from another community buying a product that while celebrating love, also celebrates Black love specifically.”
